The photographer: Wolfgang Zech

Born in a village in East Germany, Wolfgang Zech’s interest in motorcycle racing was basically set in stone by his birthplace, barely fifty kilometres away from Sachsenring. It was at the German track where he enjoyed his first race, in 1963; it was at this historic circuit where he also took his first pictures. “My first photo was in 1968, when Bill Ivy fell at Sachsenring”, he remembers. Since starting to dip his toes into his professional sport photography in the nineties, Zech has lost the count of how many WorldSBK and MotoGP™ races he has covered.

The photo: Rea shows his skills at Portimao

“What I like the most about my job is capturing special moments. I particularly like this picture of Gino Rea because it’s not something you’ve really seen before. I know Gino since he began his career in Superstock 600, he was a champion in that series. The picture is from Portimao and it’s one of those shots that you’ll never see twice. Gino is taking the turn with his elbow and knee on the floor, controlling the bike with one hand waving with the other… This is crazy!”
